Fun Ride

SLINGSHOT NYC

December 4, 2020

Thanks Anya and Coco for a great event this past Saturday!

It was teams of two I rode with Nillie we had a blast ❤️

Coco did a writeup, Check it!

How it conceptualized –

I like to take Madison to get uptown, because there’s no bike lane and less double parking. As a messenger, one can get to UES significantly fast. When covid hit, the empty streets were so much fun. For a brief time, Madison ave. became a pseudo workout. The idea of the relay was inspired by Shardy’s Four/Twenty ride, and the lack of navigation influenced by the annual Bombing Down Broadway. It just so happened that the “slingshot” resembles a “lucky wishbone” in a way that “may the best one win” between the pair – but in this case, the fastest – something I hadn’t realized until after the race. Not to mention, the original Madison Square Garden that held the ‘Six Days at Madison’ – the og track bike race. Thus, your city’s makeshift velodrome.

The Central Park Raccoons began as a training collective of various teams meeting twice a week to ride. The name manifested upon 2020’s Warriors Ride, with new faces. The collective grew to CAT 3, 4, 5 (and 6) track racers. Each member using their unique talents, they assembled together to begin promoting racing, emphasizing inclusivity and diversity. Women’s field grew larger with free women / trans / femme entry, along with the positivity and networking within the community.
